〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Finn "the Human" Mertens
CHARACTER AGE: 17
SERIES: Adventure Time
CHRONOLOGY: After listening to the Music Hole's song in "Come Along with Me"
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Random!
BACKGROUND: Wiki Link
PERSONALITY:
At his core, Finn is someone who strives to live up to the ideals of a hero. He's generally a good-natured person who will always seek to help out others in need and prides himself on his lawful nature. He has a passion for going on adventures and is quite seasoned at exploring dungeons and fighting villains, to the point where he is familiar with most of the associated conventions. At the same time, he can be headstrong and impulsive, which often results in him getting in over his head and messing up. He's also not especially smart and can be too trusting towards other people, which can result in him easily being outwitted or tricked by others. When it comes to solving problems Finn tends to approach obstacles his fists rather than his brains, although he can come up with clever plans from time to time.
Although Finn can get quite excitable, he is also often very chill and presents himself in a calm, laidback manner. Like many characters in the world of Adventure Time, he also has a tendency to utilize weird slang when he speaks. He typically presents himself more politely around authority figures and people he happens to be helping. At the same time, he is capable of acting in a childish and rude manner, especially against antagonists, or in the form of good-natured jokes/pranks with friends. Aside from adventuring, Finn loves pulling off different stunts and tricks, playing all sorts of games (video games, board games, card games, you name it), and singing/dancing/beatboxing. Finn has a love of fighting evil and is willing to kill monsters when it feels necessary. His feeling on this matter do shift somewhat over the course of the series, as Finn comes to realize this during one of the series' last episodes. In those episodes, he felt driven to help Princess Bubblegum and her Uncle Gumball to make peace with each other instead of going to war, as he found that he opposed the war entirely. This was a far cry from the Finn who was always ready to fight his problems. He had grown into someone who will try to seek out peaceful solutions if possible and avoid conflict.
Finn has been known to pity and help others, even if they are initially at odds with each other. One notable was evident in his relationship with the Ice King, who was like his arch enemy. Initially, Finn was only set on defeating and humiliating that enemy. But as he learned of the Ice King's tragic past, Finn came to pity him. Over time, he came to treat him more as a weird friend than as his enemy and referred to him by his real name, "Simon". Then there was his grass duplicate, who was known as Fern. Finn's initial kneejerk reaction to the existence of Fern was to think of him as some evil doppelganger. But he quickly came to understand that Fern truly was another him and tried to treat him as such. He approached Fern with patience, friendship and understanding. They only had one clash after Fern tried to imprison and replace him - at that time, Finn gave into his anger and attacked Fern, showing that his patience and kindness have limits. He ultimately calmed down and attempted to reach out to Fern, even if he accidentally temporarily killed him moments later. In the end, Finn continued to try to reach out to Fern even after he had fallen to Uncle Gumball's side, and in the end, he was able to find a way to truly connect with Fern and to help him to defeat his demons. Finn mourned and honored Fern after his ultimate passing, and according to one of the comics, though of secondary canon, Finn ultimately considered Fern to be his brother.
For most of his life, Finn has known himself as the only or last human around. This has caused him to feel a unique sense of loneliness, even though he was raised in a loving family of dogs. In his own words, he could sometimes get "all weird and soul searchy" about it. Over time, he has slowly gotten to discover and know more humans, which has included finding out that some people he already knew (such as the Ice King) used to be human. He even met his biological human father eventually, only to end up feeling disillusioned by the type of person he turned out to be. Martin Mertens was self-centered, manipulative and quick to run away from problems, which included Finn himself. Finn became easily angered, frustrated and bitter regarding his father. When his father ascended to another plane, Finn managed to make some sort of peace with him, or at least with accepting that he was never going to change. For the most part, he holds onto resentful feelings about his father, and he seems to hold some fears about potentially becoming like him. His meeting with his mother was relatively smooth, even if it involved her having becoming an AI and her almost separating Finn's mind from his body. With her, he came into contact with a whole society of surviving humans. Although he did not spent much time with them, he has begun to get used to spending time with other human beings.
Over the course of the series, in which he ages from 12 to 17, Finn has matured considerably. He managed to get over his fear of the ocean for the most part. One other notable aspect of him that shifted was how he approaches relationships. Initially, he was simply in denial about having a crush on Princess Bubblegum. He went from there to being desperate about finding love in his life. And once he had a girlfriend, he ended up thoughtlessly blowing it and spiraled into a deeper and much cringier level of desperation. He has ultimately worked his way through that and seems to have reached a place where he's in less of a rush to have a relationship. He has become more thoughtful and considerate of others' feelings, and he takes it better when things do not necessarily go his way. This can be seen in the sincere apology that he delivers to Flame Princess in "Bun Bun", as well as in how amicably he takes Huntress Wizard's rejection in "Flute Spell". His view on Princess Bubblegum has also matured over the series. He has not only gotten over his crush on her, but he's also realized and accepted her flaws as a person over time. This has helped them to become truer friends then ever.
POWER:
Within canon, Finn does not have special powers (aside from a few one-off things that I will not utilize for his in-game powers) and is pretty much just made of fight.
1. Mechanical Arm: This will essentially be the mechanical arm that he has in canon, which he gained in the episode "Two Swords". It is stronger than a normal arm and also has a voice-activated feature which can turn the hand of the mechanical arm into different tools, including a makeshift weed wacker.
2. Jake Projection: This is one that I think fits in well with Adventure Time's weird style of humor and hints of emotion. Basically, this power will allow Finn to temporarily project a miniature version of Jake the Dog onto his shoulder or the shoulder of someone in his vicinity. This Jake will then spout a random piece of advice (which may or may not be helpful/relevant) and then disappear instantly.
3. Instant Swords: A completely new power that I think will be both useful in fight scenes and a potential source of comedy. This will be the ability to change random objects into swords in Finn's hands. However, the swords will vary dramatically in size and quality, as it will often produce swords that are small and/or weak.

[The video feed clicks on to reveal a teenage boy looking directly into the camera. He wears a white bear hood, from which several strands of blonde hair work out.]
Oh, it's on! Sweet! [He raises his other hand to give a little wave.] Hey all. My name's Finn, and I'm new in town. ...And by new in town, I mean new in this entire dimensional town. Ya dig?
I'm from a kingdom called Ooo, so if you know anything about that, talk me up. If not, talk to me anyway? I like, y'know, making friends and junk. I'm also kind of an adventurer? So if you know any monsters that need a good butt-kicking, then I'm all about taking care of that! It's all part of this adventuring hero-type biz, y'know?
[He shifts nervously.]
As a side note, is it just me, or does this place seem... like, super super humany? I've never seen so many human peeps all up in one place before! What's up with that? [It's almost like this world hasn't suffered a bizarre apocalypse!]
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: Test Drive
FINAL NOTES:
The only things I think he'd have with him would be his clothes/bear hat and his flute.
